Rose Hair Barrettes Tutorial

I was over at Twig and Thistle's blog today and found the greatest DIY idea and tutorial created by The Purl Bee. In a few simple steps and with a few pieces of wool felt and some embroidery thread you can make this totally cute hair barette. For all of those vintage and eclectic weddings which are so popular right now, this might just be a great addition for your bridesmaid's hair or even your own.

And for those of you who aren't crafty or the sewing type, The Purl Bee has step-by-step instructions complete with photos. So if I think I might be able to pull it off I think you can too!

Last Night's ISES/Sasha Souza Event Recap
First of all, let me tell you that she is a spitfire. She's super outgoing and opinionated and totally funny, just as you would expect from any fiery redhead. I think the one piece of advice I will take most from her is the belief that people pay you for your opinion, and she certainly gives hers freely. She spoke with all of us regarding the current trends in weddings and colors and ideas. Most of it was things I already knew, but in some cases she took it to the next level, which was really nice. I'm super excited to get to use that knowledge in upcoming weddings I plan or even just in inspiration boards in the future. I was also really glad that she puts a high priority on innovation and new ideas. That has always been my goal, giving the couple something they couldn't find anywhere else.
After her great speech I got to go up and meet her, chat a little bit about blog sites (as she's not in love with her typepad right now..I don't blame her), and got her to sign my copy of her book. If you haven't gotten a chance to even just look at her book yet you certainly should. It's full of amazing pictures which are sure to give you ideas or inspiration for your own wedding. You can buy the book online at Amazon.com for a really good price (that's what I did) or you can get an autographed copy through her website for $50. Since I now have autographed wedding books from both Sasha and Mindy Weiss, I'm thinking I might make a goal of it to start getting all of the major celebrity big-name planners to sign their books for me and keep it as a collection. That'll likely take me awhile unless I become some big hot shot planner, but it's something fun to look forward to maybe.
In addition to letting you know about the event, I wanted to let you know about the venue. It's called the Leftbank Annex and it was such an awesome place! I'd never heard about it before, so I'm figuring many of you haven't either. It's a large warehouse-type building which used to hold WWII planes back in the day and it's located right across from the Rose Garden. When you walk in you can go up the stairs to a giant space, complete with an elevated stage and an additional level of rooms (this is where our event was) or you can go downstairs for an additional large space and the bathrooms. I loved the downstairs because it had an area which could easily be a long ceremony area and then an adjoining room perfect for a reception of 200 or so. Upstairs I'm sure can hold about 1,000 or so. They have preferred vendors, many of which were at the event, and the food prepared by Bon Appetit was extremely fancy! It's certainly not your venue if you want something with a lot of personality and natural decor, but it definitely is if you like things that look urban or could be easily turned into anything you want through use of pipe/drape and/or lighting. I must tell you that the highlight for many (as personally witnessed) was the hand air drying machine in the bathroom which blows with extreme power and is certainly eco-friendly. My only caution about the venue would be to check with them regarding parking. For the event they arranged to open up one of the Rose Garden parking lots and we simply paid $5 to park and walked across the block. If they have a memo of understanding with the Garden maybe you can do that as well, but if not, there certainly aren't a lot of spots nearby for your guests to park.
Anyway it was a long night and it's been a long work day so that's it for now, but I do have two great inspiration boards to share with you in the next two days so keep an eye out! You won't want to miss them.

Calling It Off...
But whether he called it off or you did or you're simply postponing the wedding indefinitely to work on your relationship, there are steps you'll need to take and etiquette to remember.
First of all, if you've sent out invitations already, you'll need to send out some sort of notice that the wedding has been cancelled. Especially if it is close to the wedding date, having friends or family members call your guest list to tell them that the wedding is off is a great idea. With a little more time, it may be easier or more convenient to send a simple note. Etiquette says that you shouldn't describe why the wedding isn't happening, in fact it is improper. "Mr. and Mrs. Jones wish to inform you that the wedding of John Smith and Jane Doe has been cancelled/postponed," is all that is required. For couples in my position (i.e. a save-the-date has been sent but no invitation) there is no etiquette requiring whether you should or shouldn't send out notice, but you should probably at least inform anyone who might be flying or travelling a distance to the wedding, to ensure that they don't book tickets or accommodations for a wedding that isn't occurring.
If you have had an engagement party, wedding shower, etc., etiquette states that you should return any and all gifts to the person(s) you received them from, including things that are monogrammed. If you have already opened or used a gift, it is proper to buy something to give back to that person in its place. Now the reality is that most people won't take them back from you, and you'll get to keep them anyway, but you should always try first.
Also, if you've purchased items for the wedding and would like to get your money back, see if you have the receipts and try to return them. If it has been too long to return an item, try selling it on Craig's List or Ebay where another bride might be happy you were choosing to get rid of it. This should get you back some money. Your wedding dress or a few other items may be harder to return or sell, but think about keeping them too. You may use them in the future or may just want to keep them as a momento.
The next step is to notify your vendors. Everyone from your officiant to your florist to your musician will need to be notified ASAP. It's not always a rush, but usually the sooner you notify your vendor the more likely you are to have your deposit returned or at least a percentage of that deposit returned. I encourage brides to ask vendors who will not give back a deposit if they can use that deposit in any other way. When my mom cancelled her wedding in Oregon to move it to California, the photographer offered to use her deposit to pay for a book of her engagement photos and even offered that she could pass the deposit on to me, since I was engaged at the time. You may also ask (if you believe you'll be staying in the same area for a long time) that they hold on to that deposit for whenever you may choose to get married again. They may not agree, but it's worth a try. Most vendors are pretty nice about it unless you're giving them little notice. DO NOT get angry with a vendor for not returning your deposit when it was stated in your contract. Try to work with them instead, because you did agree to it when you signed the dotted line.
This should be obvious, but regardless of who calls off the wedding, do return the ring. I had a coworker whose son was engaged but his fiancee called it off and never gave back the engagement ring or wedding band (he was not very smart to have given her both before they were married). He was devastated and in addition was out a large sum of money. The legal rule, to my understanding, is that the only time a woman can keep her engagement ring is when it was given to her as a birthday or Christmas gift. So word to the wise, if you are about to propose to your girlfriend/boyfriend choose a day other than those two, or else you might regret it later.
Finally, remember that life goes on, and eventually you will be ok. You will naturally undergo some amount of grief, but not doing this can be worse for your health and your mental state. Take time to yourself, treat yourself well, and relax. Maybe spend more time with family or start a new hobby or just get away on a personal vacation for awhile. I guarantee you'll be much better off for having done it. Oh and try to find at least one reason to laugh each day. I think laughter is definitely the best medicine and you can't help but smile when you laugh.
If you are going through a similar situation and want someone to talk to I'm always here, in addition to being able to give other advice regarding canceling or postponing your wedding. My email is as always, triedandtrueweddings@gmail.com and I love being able to help out brides (former, future, or current) in need.

Printable Candy Buffet Signs

As a special treat for you this Sunday, I found a great resource over on Ruffled. If you lack the ability to design your own printable candy buffet signs, Carolynn from Two Brunettes has designed a cake sign, candy buffet signs, and blank cards to make your own or use as placecards. With any ability in a program like Illustrator you could even edit them yourself to specialize as you wish (specifically with colors or fonts). They're just fabulous and if you want to download them as I did, click here.

Friday's Fabulous Finds from Etsy
Don't have time to make monogram letters for the church or reception yourself? Just have etsy seller restruct3 make them for you! They sell for $48 and look pretty great to me.

Since vintage weddings are pretty much "the thing to do" in weddings right now, why not go for a vintage tiara headband instead of the typical tiara? Etsy seller lilyrosetiaras makes some great ones.

I just can't get enough of this ethereal hairpiece by etsy seller sibodesigns.
This beautiful vintage garter looks like something straight out of the Victorian era. How romantic! It's made by etsy seller garterlady.

Or this one too by the same seller! It would be perfect for a gothic black, white, and red wedding...especially if you have her dark brown/black hair.

This is by far one of my favorite invitation suites I've ever found on etsy. It's a great deal which includes RSVP cards a complete envelope invite with pockets, envelope, etc. Custom colors and order changes are possible. Contact etsy seller embellishedbytiffany if you're interested. I am!
Ok well that's enough amazing ideas to show you for today. Gotta leave some for the next time! Have a fabulous Friday and a fantastic weekend. I know I will.
PS: Happy Valentine's Day weekend everyone! I hope you get to spend it with the one(s) you love.

Photo Montage: Pictures without Faces
I am really in love lately with photos that don't actually show the bride & groom's faces (the same can be said for engaged couples). No it's not because they don't look good, but because I think sometimes a story can be told simply by the photo itself, with no actual emotion expressed. Each image shares a little bit about the couple without making it overtly obvious. So force your family and friends to think a little about your photos and see if you can tell a story without your smile...

In order from top to bottom, photos are from: Blake James Photography (very top), Jason McGrew Photography, Blushalicious Blog, Unknown, Amorology Weddings, Green Wedding Shoes, Amorology Weddings, Jamie Hammond Photography, and Bryan Rupp Photography. As always if your photo has not been properly attributed, please let me know and I will remedy it right away.
Happy planning!

Creative Uses of Pomanders

When you hear the word pomander, what often comes to mind is a small, round shaped sphere of flowers usually carried by flower girls down the aisle at a wedding..that is, if you're familiar with the word at all. And I think it's a great alternative to the typical small bouquet or tossing of flower petals for your flower girl. But today what I wanted to show you is how floral designers are using them in newer and more imaginative ways to complement your wedding day decor.

In the inspiration board I made above, you'll see that these floral designers have used the balls (made often of spider mums or billy buttons or similar round easy-to-cluster flowers like carnations) as accents in decorative centerpieces, as door decor in the shape of a heart, as the primary floral accent for a centerpiece, and as hanging decor for a wedding or reception as well. These pomanders are used in ways that bring an additional "wow" to your event (as I'm sure many of your guests won't have seen anything like them before) and give the eye something to look at, especially if you hang pomanders in a variety of colors. What's even greater is that with a little practice, anyone can make a pomander themselves with materials from a craft store and flowers from your local grocery store, so if you're struggling on budget, maybe learning how to make these is the best way to save a few dollars.

I hope this inspiration board and the additional photos provided give you a few new ideas for the floral element of your own event!
Note: the pictures above are taken from Twigg Botanicals, JL Designs, and Oakstream Photography, as well a few miscellaneous blogs. If your picture is not properly attributed, please let me know and I will remedy it right away. Thanks!

New Trend: A Variety of Cakes
The trend: a variety of cakes on the cake table.
We've gotten so used to seeing one giant cake at a wedding that we've forgotten that this trend hasn't been so trendy always. Because weddings were often smaller back in the days and people didn't spend so much money on an event that only lasted a few hours, couples rarely put a large chunk of the budget into their cake. In fact it was common to have family members bring desserts with them to the reception as a way to show their appreciation if they weren't bringing a gift.
Today's couples may not be asking their attendees to bring dessert, but they are ordering a multitude of cakes (in a variety of sizes, shapes, flavors, etc.) instead of just one for the cake table. This not only saves your budget in many cases (as even a traditional grocery store can pull this off) but makes sure that everyone attending can likely find one flavor they're ok with eating, if not many. I'm attaching photos below of some great cake tables exemplifying this trend.

And why stop with cake? You can do the same with pie, as this couple did.

The possibilities are endless. If you don't like pie, what about a variety of cheesecakes? And if you really can't afford a cake at all, maybe you go back to the old days and ask for dessert instead of that fourth toaster. You'd probably be more satisfied in the end anyway, lol.
The pictures above come from the following sources (in order from top to bottom): 100 Layer Cake, Green Wedding Shoes, Lucky and Lovely, and Lucky and Lovely again.
