The trend: a variety of cakes on the cake table.
We've gotten so used to seeing one giant cake at a wedding that we've forgotten that this trend hasn't been so trendy always. Because weddings were often smaller back in the days and people didn't spend so much money on an event that only lasted a few hours, couples rarely put a large chunk of the budget into their cake. In fact it was common to have family members bring desserts with them to the reception as a way to show their appreciation if they weren't bringing a gift.
Today's couples may not be asking their attendees to bring dessert, but they are ordering a multitude of cakes (in a variety of sizes, shapes, flavors, etc.) instead of just one for the cake table. This not only saves your budget in many cases (as even a traditional grocery store can pull this off) but makes sure that everyone attending can likely find one flavor they're ok with eating, if not many. I'm attaching photos below of some great cake tables exemplifying this trend.

And why stop with cake? You can do the same with pie, as this couple did.

The possibilities are endless. If you don't like pie, what about a variety of cheesecakes? And if you really can't afford a cake at all, maybe you go back to the old days and ask for dessert instead of that fourth toaster. You'd probably be more satisfied in the end anyway, lol.
